1. How old do you have to be to get a license?

  • A: To get a license you must be at least 16 years old.

2. Is there a graduated license system in place? If so, what is it?

  • A: Yes. If you are under 18, you will receive a provisional license. The following restrictions apply to minors when issued a provisional driver license.
    You must be accompanied and supervised by a licensed parent, guardian or other licensed driver 25 years of age or older or a licensed or certified driving instructor when you:
    • Transport passengers under 20 years of age at any time, for the first six months.
    • Drive between midnight and 5 AM for the first 12 months.

3. How do I apply for a driver license?

  • A: To apply for a driver's license, you must apply for a learners permit and have held the permit for at least 6 months and have driven the required 50 hours (10 at night). After these have been met, the applicant must pass a road test.

  • A: Identification and parental consent must be established before getting a permit. To get the license, proof that you have completes 50 hours of supervised behind the wheel training as well as 6 hours of professional driver training is required.

  • A: To get a driver's permit/license you must go to a California DMV office in your area.

9. How much will my driver license cost?

  • A: $25 application fee entitles you to three exams of any type within the 12-month period and pays for both the instruction permit and the driver license. If all requirements are not met within the 12-month period, the application becomes void and all steps must be completed again.

10. Do I have to be enrolled in school to get a permit/license?

  • A: Yes. The court will suspend, restrict, delay, or revoke your driving privilege for one year if you are convicted of being a habitual truant from school.

11. I am under 18 and have my license. What restrictions/rules do I have to follow?

  • A: The following restrictions apply to minors when issued a provisional driver license.
    You must be accompanied and supervised by a licensed parent, guardian or other licensed driver 25 years of age or older or a licensed or certified driving instructor when you:
    • Transport passengers under 20 years of age at any time, for the first six months.
    • Drive between midnight and 5 AM for the first 12 months.
    Persons under 18 may not be employed to drive a motor vehicle. When you become 18, the provisional part of your license ends. You may continue to drive as an adult using your photo license, which will expire on your 5th birthday after the date you applied.
