NOTE: I DRIVE SAFELY's Texas Driver Education Course is a "concurrent" program. That is, when the student
and his or her parental instructor have completed 6 hours of the course (Units 1 and 2), the student may apply for a
driving permit. Once he or she receives a permit, both the student and parental instructor must complete the
remaining 26 hours of the course at the same time as the behind the wheel instruction. Keep in mind that the
parental instructor can only conduct 2 hours of instruction per day and only one of these hours can be in-car practice.
Also, there are a total of 55 hours of behind-the-wheel sessions outlined in the course. However, this is simply a recommendation; Texas only requires 14 hours of in-car practice.
