How To Get Your License in Colorado
1. Complete I DRIVE SAFELY's Online Driver Education course
- Obtain certificate of completion
2. Apply for a Driver Education Permit
- Available to minors 15 years - 15 years, 6 months
- Must present a completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (DR2460)
- Must present a completed Affidavit of Completion of a Driver Education Course showing completion of a department-approved Driver Education Course 6 months prior to applying for the permit
- Must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a professional driver as per Colorado law SB07-77
3. Apply for Driver Awareness Permit (required if under 16 years of age)
- Available to minors 15 years, 6 months - 16 years
- Must present a completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (DR2460)
- Must provide documentation indicating you have completed a 4-hour driver awareness program approved by the department
4. Apply for Minor Instruction Permit (if 16 to 21 years of age)
- Available to minors 16 years to 21 years of age
- Must present a completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (DR2460)
- Must pass a written test and vision exam
5. Apply for a Driver's License
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must have completed at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training, 10 of which must be at night
- Minors under 18 years of age must hold a Driver Education Permit for a minimum of 12 months before applying for a Driver's License
- Must pass a written test, vision exam, and behind-the-wheel test
